Mavio Dictation

In any app on your Mac

Talk, and it is typed wherever your cursor is.

Hold fn, say what you mean, and let go. Mavio writes it into the email, document or chat you already have open. It is the same app that keeps your meetings, so there is nothing more to install.

On every plan60 languagesOnly the text is kept

  1. 01

Put your cursor where the words go

An email, a document, a chat, a search box. Anywhere you can type.

  2. 02

    Hold fn and talk

A small capsule in the corner of the screen shows that Mavio is listening. Nothing is typed while you speak.

  3. 03

    Let go

Mavio writes down what it heard. It takes a moment, and the capsule says so.

  4. 04

    It is typed

The text lands where your cursor is, in one piece. Control, Command and V pastes it again somewhere else.

What it does with it

It writes the way you would have typed it.

Left alone, dictation types what you said and nothing else. The rest is yours to turn on, a piece at a time.

  • Names and terms, spelled your way

Teach the Dictionary a word, or a spelling to use in place of what it hears. Your teammates’ names are listened for already, and the same words are listened for in your meetings.

  • A phrase that types a paragraph

Say a snippet’s phrase while you dictate and its whole text is typed: a sign-off, an address, the answer you give every week.

  • As you said it, or tidied

What you say is typed as you said it. On Pro and Business, turn tidying on and Mavio drops the ums and keeps the last version when you correct yourself.

  • Say what to do with it

Turn on commands, select some text, hold Control with your dictation key and say what you want done. Mavio rewrites the selection where it stands. With nothing selected, what you say is a question for Eva. On Pro and Business.

Everything else

For the days you talk more than you type.

None of it is in your way until you want it, and most of it is off until you turn it on.

60 languages
Choose up to five and mix them in one sentence, or choose none and Mavio works the language out each time. It can also type in a different language from the one you speak.
Hands free
Press the dictation key twice and talk without holding anything, for up to twenty minutes. Press it again to finish, or Esc to throw the dictation away.
Rewrites
Polish and Prompt Engineer are built in, and you can write eight of your own. Run one on any dictation afterwards or, with commands on, on whatever you have selected. On Pro and Business.
A style for each kind of app
With tidying on, a message to a friend is not written like an email. Formal, casual, very casual or excited, set for personal messages, work messages, email and everything else. In English, on Pro and Business.
Scratchpad
A small window that stays on top of the others, to dictate or type into when there is nowhere else. What you write there is kept as you go.
History
Everything you dictated, searchable, with what you said beside what was typed. Copy one again or delete it. On Pro and Business, redo one with tidying or rewrite it.
Your own shortcuts
fn is where it starts. Use a right-hand modifier key instead, a combination of keys, or a button on your mouse.
Your voice

Where what you say goes, and what is left of it.

  1. 01

    Heard only while you ask

Dictation is off until you turn it on, and the microphone is used only for as long as a dictation lasts.

  2. 02

    Sent to be written down

The audio streams to Mavio’s servers, and on to our speech recognition provider, as you speak.

  3. 03

    The audio is not kept

Only the text is. A dictation that could not be sent waits on your computer, encrypted, for up to a day.

  4. 04

The text is yours to keep, or not

Keep your history forever, for 30 days, 7 days or 24 hours, or do not keep it at all. Delete any dictation whenever you like.

  • A password field is typed exactly as it was heard. It is never tidied and never kept.
  • To put a space or a capital where one belongs, Mavio looks at the two characters before your cursor and at which app is in front. It reads more only if you turn that on, and then sends only the names it finds.
  • Recognition runs on Mavio’s servers, not on your machine. We would rather say so than claim otherwise.
One app

The app that keeps your meetings also takes your dictation.

Dictation is not a second thing to install or learn. It lives in the Mavio desktop app, one switch away from your meetings, and it shares what Mavio already knows. The words in your Dictionary are listened for in your meetings too, and your teammates’ names are known to both.

What you need

Built for the Mac first.

Hearing a key in every app, and typing into whichever one is in front, is work the operating system has to allow. On the Mac that work is done. On Windows it has only begun.

Questions

Answered plainly.

Which apps does it work in?

Any app you can type in. Mavio puts the text where your cursor is, so the app does not have to support it. If there is no text field in front of you, nothing is typed, and Control, Command and V pastes that dictation wherever you go next.

Do the words appear as I speak?

No. A small capsule in the corner of the screen shows that Mavio is listening, and the text arrives in one piece when you let go of the key.

Is my voice recorded or kept?

The audio is sent to be written down and is not kept. Only the text is saved, and you choose for how long: forever, 30 days, 7 days, 24 hours, or not at all. A dictation that could not be sent waits on your computer, encrypted, for up to a day.

Does it change what I said?

Not unless you ask it to. What you say is typed as you said it. On Pro and Business, tidying has two levels you can turn on: Light drops filler words and keeps the last version when you correct yourself, and Medium also tightens rambling sentences while keeping your facts, names and numbers.

Which languages does it understand?

60. Choose up to five that you speak and you can mix them in one sentence, or choose none and Mavio works the language out each time. It can also type in a different language from the one you spoke.

Does it read my screen?

To put a space or a capital letter where one belongs, it looks at the two characters before your cursor and at which app is in front. It reads the text around your cursor only if you turn on Spell names from my screen, and then it sends only the names it finds. Password fields, number-only fields, the browser's address bar and password managers are never read.

Which plan do I need?

Any of them. Dictation is part of the desktop app on every plan. Free has 2,000 words a week, Pro has 50,000, and Business has no limit. Tidying, styles, rewrites and commands are on Pro and Business, and sharing a dictionary or snippets with your workspace is on Business.

Does it work on Windows?

Dictation is built for the Mac first. The Windows app has an early version: Ctrl, Shift and Space starts a dictation and stops it, and the text is pasted where your cursor is. Hold to talk, commands, styles and your own shortcuts are on the Mac only for now. There is no dictation on the web, on mobile or on Linux yet.

Say the next email instead of typing it.

Install Mavio, switch to Dictation in the sidebar, and turn it on. Your meetings are in the same app whenever the next one starts.
